A smile is one the most important aesthetic factors inherent in a person. A pretty and attractive smile conveys a positive image and stimulates the individual to smile easily and naturally. A well-ordered mouth, one that is healthy and harmonious, brings confidence in oneself.
Aesthetic dental procedures often require multi-disciplinary planning in which the specialties of orthodontics, periodontics, dental surgery and prosthesis all take part.
Nowadays, there are computers that permit detailed studies prior to carrying out any aesthetic dental procedure. On screen we can compare the real image of the patients mouth with the possible changes that can be made to the teeth or gums in order to improve the general expressive appearance. The patient him or herself can choose the dental and gingival shape, length and profile that they most like.
Once the changes we are to make have been decided upon, the images are printed and work is begun.
On some occasions, action upon the surface of an isolated tooth is enough. For this the aesthetic re-shaper, veneers and/or ceramic and composite caps can be used. To obtain a good result, however, it is not enough to simply cover the tooth with a material in the appropriate colour. Translucence, superficial micro-geography, dentine fluorescence, colour gradients, etc all come into play. It is often necessary to work with combinations of materials that are more or less translucent, opaque, modifiers of colour, depth or surface.
To obtain good results it is necessary to dedicate a great deal of time to the imitation of teeth up to the tiniest detail, using multi-layer or stratified techniques, in order to dominate the many visual effects achieved with the numerous materials currently available. It is therefore necessary for the professionals to practice, periodically, with the new and invariably better materials that continuously appear.
Each tooth accurately completed, whether composite or ceramic, is a real joy. A work of art.
Each aesthetic change must be carried out in a personalised manner, in accordance with the criteria and wishes that the patient has expressed in each case.
